Internet Explorer Security Update Causes IE11 to Crash when an Instructor Accesses a Blackboard Learn Course
Microsoft recently released a security update for Internet Explorer 11. https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2909921
MS14-010: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer: February 11, 2014
We’re now hearing from other Blackboard Institutions that with the most recent update, users are getting the error “Internet Explorer has stopped working” when they try to access Blackboard (9.1SP11 or later).
|
Workaround |
We’ve been able to replicate the issue, and find that removing the security update KB2909921 will restore functionality.
More information and steps to remove the security update can be found here.
Note: Internet Explorer 11 is not a certified browser to use with our version of Blackboard (9.1SP13). Please refer to Supported Browsers and Operating Systems page.

Calendar
Issue |
Calendar color picker does not work if your course ID has a dot (.) in it.
With the new calendar, we are supposed to be able to change the color for the courses that the calendar events belong to. However, that is not the case with JHU courses because they contain a dot (.) in them.

Issue |
Calendar selection checkboxes do not persist if your courseid has a dot (.) in it.
If you uncheck the box next to certain course calendars to remove their events from the calendar, and then you log out and log back in, the system does not remember the calendars that you unchecked. |
Workaround |

Issue |
Calendar widget does not display month correctly. Example, February 2014 has Feb 01 – 03 showing up on Wednesday – Friday (incorrect), and on Saturday – Monday (correct).
|
Workaround |
It is a display issue. You can still select the date or manually type it into the field. Resolved February 10, 2014. |

Scrolling Down the Page does not Mark Discussion Board Messages as Read
When in a discussion board there are enough posts so the user needs to scroll down to display them, the blue icon is not removed for the bottom posts, therefore leaving those posts in unread status.

Blackboard is aware of the issue.
- You can click on the blue icon to mark a post as read.
- You can also select one or more individual posts, or “All” at the top of the page and then choose Message Actions: Read.

While this has been resolved in the latest service pack (Dec 27, 2010), we still recommend only using letters, numbers, underscore and proper file extensions (e.g., doc) when naming files. |
