Browser

Issue The Java Update 7u51, issued by Oracle on January 14, 2014, contains security requirements which require changes to Blackboard Learn to accommodate. With Java Update 7u51 installed, the following functions in Blackboard Learn will not work:

  • Upload multiple files within Content Collection
  • Chat / Virtual Classroom
Workaround Blackboard is aware of the issue and is working on patches.

  • Use the single file upload function (for uploading files)
  • Roll back to a previous version of the client-side Java
  • If you cannot roll back, you can try setting the Java security from HIGH (default) to MEDIUM

Windows Mac
  1. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Java > Security tab
  2. Set slider to Medium
  3. Click OK
  1. Go to Preferences > Java > Security tab
  2. Set slider to Medium
  3. Click OK

Issue Internet Explorer Security Update Causes IE11 to Crash when an Instructor Accesses a Blackboard Learn Course
Microsoft recently released a security update for Internet Explorer 11. https://support.microsoft.com/kb/2909921
MS14-010: Cumulative security update for Internet Explorer: February 11, 2014
We’re now hearing from other Blackboard Institutions that with the most recent update, users are getting the error “Internet Explorer has stopped working” when they try to access Blackboard (9.1SP11 or later).
Workaround We’ve been able to replicate the issue, and find that removing the security update KB2909921 will restore functionality.
More information and steps to remove the security update can be found here.
Note: Internet Explorer 11 is not a certified browser to use with our version of Blackboard (9.1SP13). Please refer to Supported Browsers and Operating Systems page.
Resolved April 24, 2014.

Calendar

Issue Calendar color picker does not work if your course ID has a dot (.) in it.
With the new calendar, we are supposed to be able to change the color for the courses that the calendar events belong to. However, that is not the case with JHU courses because they contain a dot (.) in them.
Workaround Resolved December 27, 2014.
Issue Calendar selection checkboxes do not persist if your courseid has a dot (.) in it.
If you uncheck the box next to certain course calendars to remove their events from the calendar, and then you log out and log back in, the system does not remember the calendars that you unchecked.
Workaround Resolved December 27, 2014.
Issue Calendar widget does not display month correctly. Example, February 2014 has Feb 01 – 03 showing up on Wednesday – Friday (incorrect), and on Saturday – Monday (correct).
Workaround It is a display issue. You can still select the date or manually type it into the field. Resolved February 10, 2014.

Content

Issue Users Unable to Embed YouTube Videos Using YouTube Mashup or Video Everywhere (as of 4/20/2015)
Users are unable to upload and embed YouTube videos using YouTube Mashup or Video Everywhere. The uploaded video can be found on youtube.com, but searching for it in the applicable building block returns videos directing users to https://youtube.com/devicesupport.
Workaround Resolved August 22, 2015.

Discussion Board

Issue Discussion Board, Blogs/Journals and Wikis can have a zero (0) scored submission if an instructor accesses but does not grade a submission. This can also occur if an un-enrolled administrator accesses a submission.
Workaround Clear the added zero (0) scored submission. Resolved February 6, 2014.
Issue Scrolling Down the Page does not Mark Discussion Board Messages as Read
When in a discussion board there are enough posts so the user needs to scroll down to display them, the blue icon is not removed for the bottom posts, therefore leaving those posts in unread status.
Workaround Blackboard is aware of the issue.

  • You can click on the blue icon to mark a post as read.
  • You can also select one or more individual posts, or “All” at the top of the page and then choose Message Actions: Read.

Resolved May 23, 2015.

Grade Center

Issue Assignment: If an assignment filename has a hash symbol (#) in it, a user will encounter a 404 error when attempting to download submissions from the Grade Center. Note: the file never gets does get stored in Blackboard. Instructor can retrieve it Grade Center > Assignment File Download.
Workaround While this has been resolved in the latest service pack (Dec 27, 2010), we still recommend only using letters, numbers, underscore and proper file extensions (e.g., doc) when naming files.
