Teachers and Researchers United (TRU) – United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America (UE) Local 197 is the union for PhD student workers at Johns Hopkins University (JHU). Under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), consent is required for JHU to share nondirectory information with TRU-UE. This is information that TRU-UE would be entitled to under federal labor law if it were not part of a student education record that is protected by FERPA.
In addition to the directory information that JHU provides to TRU-UE to the extent permitted by FERPA, PhD students under the JHU’s collective bargaining agreement (CBA) with TRU-UE may check any of the boxes on the TRU-UE Information Consent form to disclose supplemental information to TRU-UE for the purposes of representation. If a student agrees to provide supplemental information, TRU-UE may use it only for the purposes for which the disclosure was made and may not disclose the information to any other party without the prior consent of the student. Elections that students make on the TRU-UE Information Consent form are effective until changed by the student. Any changes made to the elections on the form will not affect data that JHU has previously provided to TRU-UE.
Please see the Office of the University Registrar’s TRU-UE Information Consent Form website and the Office of the Provost’s PhD Union website for additional information.
